The 1960s - Part 1

I have been acquiring a series of negatives that appear to have been taken by a free-lance photographer in the 1960s. I presume the photographer would sell them to the news services, since they involve accidents, crimes, fires, blizzards, etc. This first grouping is a series of car accidents, predictably at intersections within the neighborhood. if you recognize anyone in the images, drop me a line, at tapeshare@yahoo.com of course.

We start at the intersection of Schenck and Liberty Avenue. The first view is looking north, toward Atlantic Avenue. The smokestack is from the old Borden's plant. The view on the right is looking east along Liberty from Schenck. Doering's fishing tackle store is visible on the right.
These are closeups from an alternate take of the second view along Liberty Avenue.
Liberty and Schenck, 1952
Ironically, this collection included an accident on the same corner in 1952; the bar at the time was the Liberty Tavern and we can see the fishing store on the right.
Many of these sets cover ENY south of Liberty Avenue, and in many cases all the buildings in the picture are gone today. The first view is south down Miller Avenue across Glenmore Avenue, alongside a 2014 view.
The second view is east along Glenmore Avenue from Miller, also paired with a 2104 view. I noted that Glenmore Avenue today runs east to west, but in the 1960s images it runs west to east.
The first view is the northeast corner of Pennsylvania and Glenmore Avenues. We see the schoolyard of Maxwell Vocational. On the right the view is east along Glenmore from Pennsylvania Avenue. The Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church is on the right.
The final view in the series is north up Pennsylvania Avenue from Glenmore, with Maxwell on the right. Of course, that playground is gone, the new Maxwell building sits on that corner.
Cleveland and Arlington, 1960s
Looking west along Arlington to Cleveland, dig the cars. The second is looking east toward Elton, P.S. 108 is in the distance.
Elton and Arlington, March 5, 1965
On the left the view is north up Elton toward Highland Park across Arlington Avenue. On the right the view is west along Arlington.

This is a closeup of an alternative view looking north. Recognize anyone?
Essex and Fulton Streets, April 1965
Both these views are north up Essex Street
Essex and Fulton Streets, April 1965
These views are east along Fulton Street from Essex. I thought that was 'Junky Joes' on the left, but Judy Close corrected me- that was on Linwood Street.
Essex and Pitkin, 1960s
These two are very similar, both looking north along Essex Street toward Pitkin Avenue.
Essex and Pitkin, 1960s
The camera is turned in the opposite direction, south down Essex from Pitkin.
Liberty and Alabama, 1960s
The first view is west along Liberty Avenue from Alabama Avenue. The second view is south down Alabama from Liberty.
Liberty and Alabama, 1960s
Some closeups of the damaged vehicles. Both are east along Liberty Avenue and we can see the Piels administration building in the shot on the right.
New Jersey and Belmont Avenues, 1960s
Looking east along Belmont from New Jersey Avenue. Note in the 2014 image New Jersey Avenue isn't a through street, there's now a park on the left.
Berriman Street and Hegeman Avenue, 1960s
The first view is up Berriman Street. Temple Darchei Zedek, a Polish synagogue, is on the left. The temple is catty-corner across from P.S. 202. It appears the building was sold by the congregation in 1969. The second view is southward down Hegeman; the overpass is for the trackyards at the end of the Livonia line.
Berriman Street and Hegeman Avenue, 1960s
Some closeups; in front of the temple and again along Berriman Street. After seeing the images, Zevi Isseroff shared with me; "My dad would drag me to Talmud classes there on Saturday afternoon, given by the Rabbi, Israel Beniawski."
Warwick Street and Dumont Avenue, March 1965
On the left is a view west along Dumont from Warwick Street. In the background, the building jutting out is a synagogue, Congregation Atereth Shlomo. There is a Vito Battista poster on the pole on the left. The view on the right is looking south down Warwick across Dumont Avenue, and you can see Yiddish on the store window on the right.
Hemlock Street and Belmont Avenue, 1960s
The first view south along Hemlock Street across Belmont Avenue. The second is east along Belmont from Hemlock. Almost all the buildings in these 2 images are still standing.
Hemlock Street and Blake Avenue, March 26, 1965
The first view is east along Blake Avenue across Hemlock Street. That view would change substantially in 1971 when the Linden Plaza Apartments were completed, as seen in the 2014 view on the right.
Hemlock Street and Blake Avenue, March 26, 1965
This view is south along Hemlock from Blake Avenue. The Pink houses are visible in the distance.
Autumn and Belmont Avenues, 1960s
The next series I failed to win on EBay, hence the watermarks. If the successful bidder is out there and wants to swap scans, drop me a line! These two views are Autumn Avenue about 1965, first looking north from Belmont Avenue and the second looking south.
Autumn and Belmont Avenues, 1960s
The view is east along Belmont Avenue from Autumn.
